The corner of Peel Square and Peel Street. A P Gray was the local newsagent and I often went in there to pay for the weeks papers to the Old People's Homes and to buy Gay News. There was no Internet in the 60s and anonymous magasine box numbers were the only way to make contact. Being Gay was illegal in those days.

Huddersfield Road at the bottom of Victoria Road. The obelisk was removed to five free movement to traffic. The Miners Offices with the round building is where King Arthur used to hold court. King Arthur being Arthur Scargill.

Woolworth was an important part of Barnsley retailing. You could "but it or knock it from Woolies". Sadly no more. You could get anything from Woolies from my first 45 rpm single, parts for my train set and condoms. They sold them without asking questions and didn't know my parents.
Instead of preserving its unique market it build a monster of a concrete jungle.

Originally Barnsley Town Hall was not meant to have a tower and a clock but money was gathered. Here it is at the start of constructing the clock tower.

Max Bygraves brought back memories singing with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
It took until 1925 to build the War Memorial which stands in front of the Town Hall. It commemorated men lost in WWI. Fortunately there was space for those lost in WWII, Suez, Korea, Falkalands and many more.

A clothes horse. Barnsley had a sooty atmosphere so washing was put on the line for the shortest time possible and then ironed with final drying (or airing) being done in front of the fire. Ideal for keeping small boys in short trousers nice and cold on winter Mondays.

Honest Freddies one of several big sell shops that sprung up in the 70s. All full of bargains - HONEST
Huddersfield Road at Wilthorpe. Note on the right is a white house. The one you can see is 145 Huddersfield Road occupied by the Wilsons. I lived at 147. These were all concrete houses, even the ceilings. The houses were cold even in a hot summer. You can see on the right the corrugated roof of the BMC agency - Eyres.
Every August in Feast week Barnsley emptied and businesses closed down. You could find your neighbours at Blackpool.

Many Factories would close for a day trip to the seaside. Even in the late 60s when I worked for Barnsley Housing and Welfare we closed the offices for a day trip to Blackpool. Fred Sharpe who had retired in the previous November came with us but died on the streets.
